back label: a first growth from the boreaux region, chateu mouton rothschild is one of the world's finest wines. it comprises 185 acres of vins at pauillac in the medoc, planted with classic bordeaux varieties. brought to the pinnacle by baron philippe de rothschild (1902-1988), who also made it a place of art and beauty, the estate now belongs to his daughter, baroness philippine de rothschild. each year since 1945 a famous artist has created an noriginal artwork for the mouton label. the artists hae complete freedom in the choice nd execution of their design.the 1997 label is illustrated by niki de saint-phalle. born in 1930, the french paianter and sculptress gained a worldwide reputation for her "nanas", opulent and brightly coloured papier-mache female figures. her other object-emblems include the serpent, familiar from the temptation story, but under niki de saint-phalle's gaily iconoclastic brush, the famous snake ha all the naivety and freshness of a child's drawing. it also knows how to adapt to the circumstances, since instead of the traditional apple this serpent is offering eve a much more tempting bottle - of mouton 97 no dout!
