the premier cru classé of the bordeaux region, château mouton rothschild is one of the most famous wines in the world. it has 80 hectares of vines at pauillac, in médoc, planted with the noble grape variety of bordelais. run at its height by the baron philippe de rothschild (1902-1988), who also made it a space of art and beauty, it is today owned by his daughter, the baronne philippine de rothschild.
since 1945, each year, a famous artist creates for the label an original piece of art, conceived with total freedom.
the 2006 vintage was confided to the british painter lucian freud (born in 1922), a universally acknowledged master of contemporary portraiture. far from the portraits and tormented nudes for which he is renowned, lucian freud chose for mouton 2006 a joyously exotic transposition about the pleasure of drinking, in which the vine stock is transformed into a springing palm tree and the wine lover into a happily anticipatory zebra.
