tiati, il grande centro fondato nel primo millennio avanti cristo dai dauni, il gruppo etnico formato con i peucezi ed i messapi. conquistata dai romani nel cccxviii a.c., assunse il nome di teanum apulum e fu municipium, con relativa autonomia amministrativa. centoundici anni piu' tardi, nel ccvii, divento famosa come centro militare dal quale parti la controffensiva romana guidata, con due legioni, dal console claudio nerone contro l'esercito cartaginese di asdrubale (ccxlii " ccvii a.c.), giunto in soccorso del fratello annibale, sconfitto e ucciso nella battaglia del metauro (ccvii a.c.). in epoca imperiale fu ribattezzata col nome di civitate.
